It started late 1999 and lasted only 8 months,
but my time as bassist with Great Day For Up (GDFU) is a memorable one.
It was the most successful band I had been
a part of up to that point in my music career. Success measured in number of gigs played together,
professionalism, and level of dedication that kept 2 of
the original 5 members producing music under the same name, getting signed
and promoted for several years after.
It was coincidence that these tracks found their way onto this site. In time they had been forgotten. Below are excerpts from the one studio EP I appeared on titled "Blue and Orange Bus", a live show at the famous CBGBs in New York, and another show months later at Valentine's, a local Albany New York music venue. To hear the contrast in what GDFU was then and is now is... remarkable.
The Lineup:
Michael Langone - Vocals
Michael Vitali - Guitar
Terry McCoy - Drums
Tom Burre - Guitar/noises
Kevin Heckeler - Bass

Myself
and songwriter Scott Watts continued our mayhem started under the
Broken
Chords/Slightly Dimmed banner. This time trying our hand at more
serious material.
Many of the songs were written and originally
released with the comedy material between 1994 and 1996. They were
dusted off, given a facelift and re-recorded January-February 2001.
Several new tracks emerged in the process and were then added to the mix.
While not radio play quality songwriting or performances, it does offer a
glimpse into where this project was heading. Songs like "Reaching
Away" revealed a certain pop-penchant in that direction. Listening
to these tracks today takes me back to an era where I took myself a little
too seriously.
Scott sang and wrote the lyrics on most of the tracks. I played guitar and was in charge of all phases of production (as usual). This was our first and only completely digital recording, utilizing my overclocked personal computer and various recording software. Used a pair of $20 Radio Shack microphones. Included on this page are links to mp3s and a lyrics file for the entire album.

SLIGHTLY BROKEN PLACE (1993-1995)
It began in 1993, months after high school graduation. Kevin and friend/songwriter Scott Watts started a brief but rewarding music project. It was a good excuse to get high and hang out. It also offered some solace from an otherwise stressful (its hard staying drunk and stoned 24/7!) and hectic (free cable television) college life. Kevin has taken the time to digitize the comedy tracks from these early days. Kevin and Scott also tried more serious songwriting but never quite found our groove. The comedy songs are the only items from the first few years that are 'acceptable' enough to be played for others. Part of their charm is their crude, creative, and edgy feel.
Below are MP3s that chronicle the brief career of their comedy project. It had undergone 4 name changes from 1993 to 2002. Represented on this site are Broken Chords, Slightly Dimmed, and Ed's Place [hence Slightly Broken Place]. They had settled on Dischord for the final serious release. At the height of popularity there was one local gig at Mother Earth's Cafe (no longer exists) and one "Quad Jam" in May of 1995. From that show the MP3 for "Baking Grandma" represents the pinnacle of their success. It's estimated that over 200 cassettes of their music was circulated in the 2+ years.
The Ed's Place banner was borrowed from one of Kevin's other side projects during 1995 and 1996. That too failed to survive the test of time. At its peak they played a single acoustic set at Mother Earth's and another small show at a local Lark Street bar (that also no longer exists).
Scott sang and wrote/improvised the lyrics on most of the tracks. Kevin played guitar and was in charge of all phases of production (as usual). They hope you find them as disturbing and fun as they did at the time these were recorded. Primary recording equipment was either an old 2 track reel to reel machine or a Tascam 4 track. Microphones varied from a $5 Radio Shack special to a Shure SM58.
