Slightly Broken Place
(1993-1995)
It began in 1993, months after high school
graduation. Kevin and friend/songwriter Scott Watts started a brief but
rewarding music project. It was a good excuse to get high and hang
out. It also offered some solace from an otherwise stressful (its hard
staying drunk and stoned 24/7!) and hectic (free cable television) college
life. Kevin has taken the time to digitize the comedy tracks from
these early
days. Kevin and Scott also tried more serious songwriting but never quite
found our groove. The comedy songs are the only items from the first
few years that are 'acceptable' enough to be played for others. Part of
their charm is their crude, creative, and edgy feel.
Below are MP3s that chronicle the brief career
of their comedy project. It had undergone 4 name changes from 1993 to
2002. Represented on this site are Broken Chords, Slightly
Dimmed, and Ed's Place [hence Slightly Broken Place].
They had settled on Dischord for
the final serious release. At the
height of popularity there was one local gig at Mother Earth's Cafe (no
longer exists) and one "Quad Jam" in May of 1995. From that show the
MP3 for "Baking
Grandma" represents the pinnacle of their success. It's estimated
that over 200 cassettes of their music was circulated in the 2+ years.
The Ed's Place banner was borrowed from one of
Kevin's
other side projects during 1995 and 1996. That too failed to survive
the test of time. At its peak they played a single acoustic set at
Mother Earth's and another small show at a local Lark Street bar (that also
no longer exists).
Scott sang and wrote/improvised the lyrics on
most of the tracks. Kevin played guitar and was in charge of all phases of
production (as usual). They hope you find them as disturbing and fun as
they did at the time these were recorded. Primary recording equipment
was either an old 2
track reel to reel machine or a Tascam 4 track.
Microphones varied from a $5 Radio Shack special to a Shure SM58.
